  • A month ago the audience at @as220providence selected "Tattoo Taboo" as the topic for tonight's @risongwritersassociation’s Songwriters in the Round. How it works is that a couple of us songwriters have a month to write a song using the audience's topic as loose inspiration, then we need to show up with said song ready to go.

After procrastinating all month and wandering around the house cursing at this task for a couple of days, I've finally decided to give in and embrace the whole damned thing. Plus, it’s kind of like a #LinePerDay on steroids. In the nature of the challenge, I'm putting the lyrics to the song below in hopes that it finalizes the tune (for the time being) and gets me to stop thinking about it until the show starts at 7. Want to hear it in action? Come on down!

LONG LETTER HOME
Goddamn this broken skyline and the sun that trickles in
Washing another faded byline etched into your skin
If the truth of you sang true to me, would you tell me where you’ve been?
I’ll anchor every whisper like ink drips from a pen

You’re a long letter home
All ink and battered bones
You’re the cadence of Virginia
All wind, you wild roam
A promise to the darkness kept in tow

You were rifling through your pages, all signed someone else’s name
Like the plaster of your walls, all warped and peeling paint
For every layer falling, the cracks hold up just the same
A thousand stippled checkmates ringing out in the devil’s game.

You’re a long letter home
All ink and battered bones
You’re the cadence of Virginia
All wind, you wild roam
A promise to the darkness kept in tow

Quit burning black and white and counting every debt you owe
Shake the dust of every memory let all your colors show

You’re a long letter home
All ink and battered bones
You’re the cadence of Virginia
All wind, you wild roam
A promise to the darkness kept in tow

You’re the findings in the fire
No one will ever know
A survivor in the rubble kept for show

I’ll be teaming up with @hauntthehouse, @kate.mick, and @pickinandhollerin to raise some money for @savethebayri! Word is that @jarrodrorymccabe will be slinging his homemade clam chowder and there will be a bucket of @gansettbeer to drink. See you there!

  • Thank you all so much! We’ve hit 92% of our goal with a day left! If you haven’t had a chance to pledge yet, now is the time! Head on over to the link in my bio to learn how!

  • It's crazy how quickly the days pass us by. I know we say that all the time, but this weekend it is showing to be particularly true. Not only is the campaign for the new album coming to a close, but it closes on my birthday, the day after Memorial Day - two days really meant to make us pause and remember to be thankful.

For birthdays, it's a nudge to be thankful for how far you've come and for all of your family and friends that have been there for you along the way. For Memorial Day, it's an important time to think about all of those that have sacrificed so much for us to live, love, follow our passions, and support each other.

Lately, with all of the love and support that you've given me, and with Memorial Day and the completion of another trip around the sun on the horizon, I've found myself completely humbled, speechless, and a little teary eyed.

I'll be heading out to The Berkshires, my home away from home for the weekend with friends to spend a little time in the woods writing and laughing, but most of the time will be spent reflecting on just how lucky I am.

If you're able to take a second and help bring this project a little closer to our goal, thank you. I can't tell you what that means to me. If not, you've done more than enough to inspire me, encourage me, and pave the way for me, and the value in that is priceless.

You can help at www.indiegogo.com/at/bernardjohn (link in bio as well)

Thank you for everything,
BJ
