“A Calculator at the Bottom of a Lake“

1,937 feet and we’re counting miles like stars with satellite chasers.
I can see it from here.
I can see it past the time zones and street signs that we’ve tallied with flickers of a candle,
A candle we left burning while we took laps over the Atlantic before we finally, unwillingly blew it out.

You walked it once, because once was enough.
You drew “fin.” in the sand and my chest screamed at the rest of my body until I broke.

It took me 267 days of trying to trace your three letters,
Poorly.

I’m 267 days late and 98 miles away while I hold your hand as you sleep,
Thinking of all the times I came home to a candle burning,
And a promise dancing in the flames.
